Edgar Allan Poe wrote many types of stories. He invented (at least developed) the detective story. The same is true of short stories. Both Poe and Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter) were famous for short stories.

Poe is probably best known for his gothic stories. Gothic stories have dark themes -- death, for example -- take place in dark places -- dark rooms, dark halls -- at dark times -- usually at midnight (or at least at night).
