A quest is a search for something, to solve something, a rite of passage, a test (or a series of tests).

The test (tests) is / are the conflicts that the character must conquer or overcome -- in other words, the protagonist must kill the dragon -- and the dragon can be many things.

Once the protagonist passes the test, he returns home -- a mature person.
